Castle Ruins
Castle ruins are the remains of a once great castle now fallen into disrepair or broken by battle. These fictional places are common to find in fantasy worlds, where they often serve as game dungeons, as reminders of the fall of a once great ancient civilization, or as the frightening consequence of an invading horde. Castle ruins feature many of the same elements as standard fictional castles do, but twist these elements to fit the broken theme. Broken towers, collapsed roofs, and floors ready to break. The throne rooms and ancestral graveyards of ruined castles may be important sites, as they act as a potent reminder of a fictional history.

Overview
Time is the most common sculptor of ruins and worldbuilders may wish to consider the fictional history of these castle ruins. Crumbling facades, moss-covered walls, and vegetation overtaking structures can be used to evoke a sense of forgotten glory. Alternatively, a siege can leave dramatic destruction: broken towers, scorched walls, and collapsed sections can provide clues of a violent end.
Walls can vary in their decline; some sections may remain largely intact, hinting at their former strength, while others have become mere rubble. Consider the purpose of each tower. A gatehouse might boast heavy fortifications, while a watchtower offers panoramic views, even in its ruined state. Broken gates and raised drawbridges can add a sense of vulnerability, inviting exploration. Crumbling staircases, collapsed floors, and overgrown courtyards create a sense of danger and the thrill of discovery.
Nature fights a constant battle to reclaim the castle. Creeping vines and ivy strangling stonework add a layer of wild beauty. Trees growing from battlements can help symbolize the passage of time. Weathering adds a touch of realism. Include erosion on exposed surfaces, moss and lichen growth, and collapsed sections due to the relentless rain and wind.
Secret chambers, hidden passages, and forgotten rooms hint at the castle’s past, waiting to be unearthed. Carvings and heraldry can speak volumes about the former inhabitants, their history, alliances, or even magical prowess. Scattered valuables or hidden treasures add an element of discovery and reward, enticing adventurers to delve deeper.
