Stables

Stables

ELEMENT │ PLACE

Stables are buildings where animals, especially horses, are housed and fed. The stables of fictional worlds are often used to house fictional creatures or animal companions. They are also commonly livery stables – places where animals can be purchased or rented for use.

Synonyms: horse barns
Example Mythonyms: the stables at Silver Reed, Red Canyon Ranch Stables

Designing Fictional Stables

Overview

Stables typically have a number of animal stalls and a place to store tack (saddles and other gear used for riding). They may have a hayloft.

Stables vary in their composition – the fictional stables of a wealthy estate may be well tended, the stables of a fantasy town or wild west setting may be wooden and worn, and the stables of a post-apocalyptic setting may be most constructed from sheet metal or repurposed from another structure.
