The Docks

The Docks

ELEMENT │ PLACE

The docks are an area where ships make port and unload. The area may encompass both man-made structures in the water (docks, piers, etc.) as well as the adjacent region of land which often serves or supports the activities of the docks. They are usually found in towns or cities and will often contain dock networks, lighthouses, warehouses, taverns, brothels, fish shambles, tackle shops, and markets. Fishing towns and raft towns may have extensive dock areas. The docks may also be a place where transport may be arranged across the seas. They are home to sailors, pirates, cutthroats, buccaneers, dockworkers, traders, fishermen, and more.

Synonyms: dockyards, wharfs, piers
Example Mythonyms: the Mudflats, Fisher’s Wharf, Lowtown

Designing Fictional Dock Areas

When designing a dock area for your world, consider the types of ships that make berth. Great trading vessels will require more room than smaller boats. The area itself may be protected by a sea wall, or secluded within a small bay. If the docks belong to a castle or other fortified area, they may be protected by walls and other fortifications.
