Shipping Containers
Shipping containers are large metal storage units used for the transport of trade goods. Fictional shipping containers may be used to smuggle people, illegal goods, or other items. As they are sufficiently large enough space, these units may hold secret laboratories, secret bases, or other hidden sites within them. Shipping containers often appear as shipping container walls in post-apocalyptic worlds or used as shacks in fictional slums, junkyards, or wastelands. They are often found in industrial areas, especially the docks, shipping yards, or train yards where they may act as shipping container labyrinths. Versions of the shipping container also exist within science fiction settings and may be involved in galactic trade routes.

Designing Fictional Shipping Containers
Shipping containers come in a variety of different colors, though older ones may possess graffiti. Each will have an identification code written on them with a owner prefix followed by a unique container number (see example mythonym above). While these containers have a single door, fictional versions may open on both ends, allowing them to serve as tunnels or bridges.
Shipping containers lost from cargo ships is one example of flotsam, and these containers may wash ashore on the coast or be located near shipwrecks.
Worldbuilders designing alternative or future versions of the humble shipping container should consider their utility. The same container can be transported by cargo ship, train, and semi-truck.
