Magic Libraries

Magic Libraries

ELEMENT │ PLACE

Magic libraries are fantasy libraries that contain spell books or magical scrolls, histories of great wizards, potion recipes, and other arcane knowledge. Fictional magic libraries may be in hidden locations, lost to time, found within schools of magic, or in modern fantasy worlds, just down the street. They may have been razed long ago and exist as ruins where ancient knowledge and forbidden spells can be found. Magic libraries often contain hidden doors, secret rooms, and restricted sections. There may be fireplaces and dens in which to read and learn. They are home to student wizards, cultists, and magically-transformed librarians.

Synonyms: houses of arcane knowledge, spell studies, athenaeums, arcane bibliotheca
Example Mythonyms: the Great Library of Vernisse, the Unknown University Library, the Lost Library of Kruul.

Libraries

Overview

Magic libraries, being magic, may contain portals, rooms that defy dimension, and hidden rooms. They also often include hidden doorways and secret passageways. They may have restricted sections for books and other items that are too powerful or dangerous for anyone to use. Often these places have a central room (or many alcoves) with fireplaces, statues, and tapestries. Magic libraries may be labyrinthian, with corridors of bookshelves that shift and rearrange themselves. While it is often important to consider the architectural components of a location, magical libraries offer worldbuilders many creative opportunities.
