Fireplaces
Fireplaces are places where fires are kept. They can be hearths where food is cooked or be used primarily for warmth and comfort. Fireplaces in fictional worlds often are secret entrances to hidden rooms or lairs. They connect to chimneys and to the rooftops and so may be a way for people, beasts, and other things to enter a building. Magical fireplaces may act as portals, scrying devices, or a means to summon someone (or something) or communicate with them.

Designing Fictional Fireplaces
Overview
The fireplace is often a central gathering place, a beacon that draws characters together. It becomes the setting for unexpected adventures, shared stories, and forged bonds. In grand halls or cozy dens, the crackling fire sets the scene for moments of wonder and merriment. But fireplaces can also conceal secrets. Fictional fireplaces are often hidden doorways that open into hidden passageways or hidden rooms.
