Chimneys

Chimneys

ELEMENT

Chimneys connect the rooftops to fireplaces or hearths and may act as a means by which people, creatures, and other things can enter a building (as long as a fire is not lit). A large, industrial chimney to vent gasses and heat is a smokestack.

Synonyms: fireplaces
Example Mythonyms: soottowers

Designing Fictional Chimneys

Overview

Chimneys can be sturdy constructions formed of stone and brick, or slender and tall pipes that stretch into the skies. Designers will want to consider how the aesthetic of the chimney matches the tone of their world and the architecture of the building it stems from.

Chimneys, and the presence of smoke rising from them, are often used in narratives and game worlds to indicate whether or not someone is currently within a house.
