Shipwreck Graveyards

Shipwreck Graveyards

ELEMENT │ PLACE

Shipwreck graveyards are fictional locations of particularly treacherous seas where there are a great number of shipwrecks in close proximity. This may be caused by a sea monster, sirens, maelstrom, or something else. They may be in areas of frequent storms, mists, or fogs. Ship graveyards may be entirely submerged beneath the sea, or half-submerged if the ships have run aground on shoals or a small island. They may have been turned into shipwreck towns by any survivors. There may be treasure or useful cargo still remaining in the wrecks, though accessing it may be difficult. They may be places to find a treasure map. They are home to sirens, sharks, octopi, pirates, sailors, and castaways.

Synonyms: shipwreck graveyards
Example Mythonyms: the Wrecks, the Narrows

Designing Fictional Ship Graveyards

Overview

Broken masts, rigging, sails, and splintered beams may all form impromptu bridges that connect the various ships. The decks of these vessels may be close to breaking. Crates and barrels, as well as cannons may be scattered over the deck. Inside may be cargo holds, smuggler’s holds, and captain’s quarters full of treasure chests, treasure maps, or important notes. There may be skeletal remains belowdecks and half-flooded rooms that sharks, octopi, and leviathans have moved into. Flotsam may be floating everywhere.

Are there maps to navigate this dangerous area?
