Imperialist Factions

Imperialist Factions

ELEMENT │ FACTION

Imperialist factions are civilizations, groups, or other factions that seek to expand their territory or realm of influence, either through diplomatic subjugation or outright conquest. While the people that live within their borders may see this as a sign of strength and the ‘sharing’ of a better way of life, any other civilization or faction that sits on their frontier may be worried they’re next in line to be annexed. Imperialist factions may also be fascist factions or evil factions. Fictional imperialist factions are often modeled after historical civilizations, frequently the Roman Empire.

Synonyms: empires, imperials
Example Mythonyms: the Imperium of Earth, New Rome

Designing Fictional Imperialist Factions

Overview

Fictional imperialist factions often have territory that can be divided into ‘core‘ and ‘peripheral‘ areas. Life within the core is often easier, with more grandiose architecture, games, and fairs bought with wealth squeezed from the more peripheral states. The borders of imperialist factions are always being expanded as new lands are conquered and frontiers are pushed outwards. Newly annexed locations may be absorbed into the empire or may be politically reorganized as puppet states.

If the fictional imperialist faction is being used as an evil faction, resistance factions may have been created to challenge their authority and free the people from the regime. Competing factions may have formed alliances to better help them face the imperialist threat.

Faction Identity

Imperialist factions are nationalistic. Their faction identity may include elements like military uniforms, flags, or mottos and oaths that reflect a commitment to their country or faction above all else. Many fictional imperialist factions are modeled after the Roman Empire during its’ height, and often the colors, symbols, architecture, and fashion draw from this source.

Conquest

War is often a constant facet of life (and may be a large part of the culture) with imperial factions. Enlisting in the legions to fight for the empire may be a prerequisite for becoming a full citizen or may confer additional titles or benefits. Culturally, military service may be held with great honor. Military parades may be frequent occurrences.
