Floodplains
Floodplains are land regions, often grasslands or plains, immediately bordering a river and are frequently flooded when that river experiences high rates of flow or floods. Because of the minerals (sand, clay, silts) deposited by the river, floodplains are often very fertile and are often the sites of farmland. Fictional floodplains may contain farms, windmills, and other agricultural-based worldbuilding elements.

Overview
While it is likely that people living on floodplains have attempted to control the river though the use of large dams, floodwalls, reservoirs, and other infrastructure, large storms may still cause the region to flood. These events may be important ones for a local history, or a current narrative event.
