Canopy Areas

Canopy Areas

ELEMENT │ REGION & BIOME

Canopy areas are a location that encompasses the upper layer of a forest or jungle. In real world ecology, this is where the vast majority of the biodiversity occurs and acts as a unique ecosystem separated from the forest floor. Fictional canopy areas often feature a network of interconnected tree limbs, creating an explorable area far above the forest floor. Platforms, catwalks, bridge systems and treetop towns may make this region even more navigable if the space is inhabited. The high canopy is home to elves, anthropomorphic animals, arboreal alien species, and forest bandits waiting for a roadside ambush.

Synonyms: canopies, branches
Example Mythonyms: the High Canopy

Overview

The design of a fictional canopy area begins with the design of a forest itself. The size of the interweaving tree limbs and their height from the forest floor will have a dramatic impact on what the canopy area eventually becomes.

Fictional canopy areas often include elements like bridge systems or catwalks. Vines may be used as a natural means to traverse this space, either acting as additional perilous bridges or being used to swing from tree to tree.

Characters leaping from limb to limb between the forest trees is a common narrative trope.
