Trapdoors

Trapdoors

Trapdoors are small hinged or sliding doors. In fictional settings, trapdoors may be part of an actual trap, such as with pitfall traps or oubliettes, or may be a simple access door to a space such as a cellar, attic, or loft. Often fictional trap doors lead to hidden passageways or to hidden rooms, and they may be concealed by the placement of a chest, rug, or other item on top of them. That is, if they are not a hidden door themselves and disguised as a portion of the floor. Trap doors often open to a ladder and may be locked by a key or secured with a sliding bar. A hidden button, lever, or other mechanism may be required for their use.

Synonyms: sliding doors, floor panels
Example Mythonyms: the secret cellar door
