This Solution is From Out of Town
This solution is from out town is one possible solution to the everyone knows this is a problem. In fictional worlds where fictional elements are common knowledge, it may be difficult for worldbuilders to communicate necessary facts to an audience that does not know this information. There may be a giant rip in the fabric of space that hangs above the town, but since that’s normal for this area no one will go out of their way to mention it. This can be a particularly large problem for game-worlds, where players will not know everything that should be common knowledge for their characters. Things like recent history, important factions, the location of nearby towns or cities should be known by anyone that lives in this world. However, the audience, or the players, do not. One solution to this problem is to have the characters, or an audience surrogate, be from ‘out of town.’ Perhaps they come from another region, a different planet, have time-traveled from the distant past, or have come from any other location that can explain why they are unfamiliar with this land. This allows characters to ask questions like “why is there a giant rip in the fabric of space hanging just above your town?” and provides a platform to build upon: “Well, have you heard of Olaf the Petty?”
