A Surrogate Solution

A Surrogate Solution

PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

Fictional worlds can be strange places, full of wonder and miraculous things. But, of course, those wonderful and miraculous things may be rather mundane to the people that actually inhabit these places. In addition, events, places, and other elements may be so ingrained in a fictional culture or history that they are known to everyone. This can cause a problem when attempting to transport an audience into a world they are unfamiliar with – they simply do not have the necessary background to understand important things. Inserting a surrogate audience – a character who knows as much about the world as the audience (nothing) can help solve this problem. This allows other characters to explain concepts to the character that does not know and thus also inform the audience. This audience surrogate may be from out of town, may have amnesia, or may simply be stupid.
