Mesa Towns & Cities
Mesa towns & cities are fictional towns or cities that exist either on the elevated tops of mesas, as a system of cavernous chambers within a mesa, or as a combination of both. They may have a town or city area surrounding the mesa with a castle or fort built above on the plateau. They may feature portions of the settlement built onto the cliffsides. Mesa towns and cities may be surrounded by vast deserts. In addition to the formidable mesa cliffsides, they may feature town walls, gatehouses, and watchtowers for defense. They may have cliffside paths that lead to secret entrances.

Overview
Water and food are important for any desert community. Mesa settlements may have cisterns or underground lakes and rivers deep within the rock. They may use wells to bring this water to the surface. For food they may depend on vertical farming techniques or farm terraces.
