Designing Fictional Guardian Gods and Spirits
Overview
Fictional guardian beings (also referred to as tutelary deities or spirits) are a widespread concept in mythology, folklore, and fantasy worlds. They are supernatural entities tasked with protecting individuals, places, or objects. Their forms and functions vary greatly across cultures and stories, but they all share the core concept of providing security and guidance. Broadly these beings can be categorized into guardians of individuals, guardians of families, guardians of groups, guardians of trades & classes, and guardians of regions or places.

Common Functions
Protection from Physical Harm: Guardians may defend against physical threats, such as monsters, intruders, or natural disasters.
Guidance and Wisdom: Guardians can offer advice, warnings, or cryptic messages to help those they protect make wise decisions.
Enforcement of Rules: Some guardians ensure that laws or codes of conduct are followed.
Maintaining Balance: Guardians may play a role in maintaining the balance between natural forces or opposing concepts.
Guardians of Places
Guardian beings that watch over regions like forests or places like ancient temples are a common worldbuilding element. Typically they are depicted as concerned for the health of whatever region they watch over, and may not take kindly to any intruders. They are often depicted with features that resemble their surroundings – temple guardians may be made from stone blocks while desert guardians may be made of sand. They are frequently very large beings and their size and bulk helps cement their function as an effective guardian.
Taken to the extreme, guardians of places may oversee the protection of entire planets, realms, or worlds.
Guardians of Individuals
Guardian beings that keep watch over individuals are beings like guardian angels or familiars – tasked with keeping their ward safe from harm. These beings are also often referred to as daimons or genius. Daimons may also be guide spirits and may help steer their wards towards their end goals.
Guardians of Families
Often ancestral spirits or other beings will act as guardians of a specific family. Often these beings inhabit ancestral graveyards until called upon for protection.

Guardians of Groups
Groups, like tribes or other factions may have guardians that protect the group. Occasionally these types of relationships are depicted as symbiotic, with humans supporting their guardian through prayer, sacrifice, or offerings and the guardian providing protection against outside threats.
Guardians of Trades & Classes
Guardians of trades and classes stand as protectors of a specific trade, group, or profession. Often these trades or classes are dangerous ones and these gods or spirits are prayed to in order to keep their charges safe. Professions like sailors, warriors, and prostitutes and classes of people like mothers and beggars all may have guardians that stand watch over their safety. These types of guardian beings are likely to have temples or shrines dedicated to them.
