Designing Fictional Torches
Torches are a basic tool of survival in many medieval fantasy worlds. They are often crafted from a long, sturdy wooden pole, typically pine or oak, with one end hollowed out to hold a bundle of linen or hemp rags soaked in tallow, a fatty substance rendered from animal carcasses.
The tallow is ignited with a flint and steel. Once lit, the torch casts a flickering, smoky flame that can be used to provide light in darkness, ward off predators, or signal for help. Torches are indispensable for travelers, adventurers, and villagers alike.
