The Problem with Knowing the Future
The problem with knowing the future is that it can make worlds and narratives unexciting by removing mystery and suspense. Whether it’s because of predictive algorithms, prophecies made by oracles, or psychic powers that peer into the unknown, knowing the future poses a problem for worldbuilders. Characters that know what is to come can make narratives flat, a fixed future can raise issues of free will designers don’t wish to directly address, and characters that constantly know the future can become invincible. Designers solve this problem in several ways. The future may be in flux and subject to change, glimpses of the future may be incomplete or confusing, and prophecies may be ambiguous and subject to multiple interpretations.
