Straits

Straits

ELEMENT │ TERRAIN

Straits are narrow channels of water that connect two larger bodies of water [lakes; oceans]. Fictional straights may be important trade routes between areas. They may also act as borders between fictional countries or factions. There may be bridges that span them. Straights may be treacherous waters that are home to leviathans.

Synonyms: Channels
Example Mythonyms: Strait of Corren, Dead Man’s Strait

Designing Fictional Straits

Overview

When designing fictional straits the coasts on either side should be considered. These may manifest themselves as towering coastal cliffs or enticing sandy beaches. The strait itself may be wide or relatively narrow (or certain areas within the strait may narrow). The depth of the water may be another thing to consider – while deeper straits may be better suited for vessels, shallow straits may feature areas of tidal flats or land bridges that connect the two sides. Sea stacks, sea caves, and islands may be present.

Straits are often critically important for the movement of navies and trade vessels. These factors mean they are of strategic importance and may be defended by castles, military bases, or other defensive structures. They may also be subject to blockade, especially if a single county controls the entire strait (the landmasses on both sides).
