Mountain Passes
Mountain passes are routes that lead across a mountain range. They may have roads, train tracks, or only allow foot travel. In fantasy worldbuilding these passes may be defended with walls, forts, or castles. They may be hidden or known only to a select few. They may include cliffside pathways and lead through mountain valleys and hidden valleys. They may be impassable during the winter months.

Designing Fictional Mountain Passes
Mountain ranges are often the sites of borders between countries or regions. Fictional mountain passes may be one of only a few sites to cross from one area to another, and as such may be heavily guarded against invasion. Castles, forts, watchtowers, and walls may be present. If the adjacent areas are on better terms, or are contained within a single country, mountain passes may represent important trade routes.
