Hidden Routes

Hidden Routes

ELEMENT

Hidden routes are trails, roads, or paths between locations or through a dangerous area which are known only to a few. Fictional hidden routes may be used as escape routes, hidden entranceways, or may provide a safe means of navigating a treacherous territory where one wrong step could end in death. Hidden routes may begin with a hidden doorway and may be labyrinthian with terrain hazards or traps. There may be maps that reveal the route.

Synonyms: secret paths, trails, forgotten passages
Example Mythonyms: the Midnight Trail, the Old Smuggler’s Route

Designing Hidden Routes

When designing hidden routes for your world, consider who knows of their existence and what areas they connect. Hidden routes may entail underground tunnels, cliffside pathways, perilous bridges, or crawlspaces. They may pass through treacherous waters, dangerous ruins, wastelands, across borders, or through other locations and regions.
