Guildhalls

Guildhalls

ELEMENT │ PLACE

Guildhalls are buildings that serve as centers for guild activities. This is where guild members come to socialize, engage in guild politics, and find guild related work. Guildhalls may be secret locations, may require passwords to enter, or may be open to the public. Each trade may have their own guildhall (if they are wealthy and organized enough) so multiple may exist in one city or town. In game-oriented worlds, guildhalls may be locations where players can receive quests if they are a member of the guild.

Synonyms: gildhalls, guild houses
Example Mythonyms: Hall of Adventurers, House of Assassins, the Fisher’s Guildhouse

Designing Fictional Guildhalls

Overview

Guildhalls will be tailored to the guild that built them so when incorporating them into a fictional world consider what guilds exist. Fictional guilds often have unique colors, symbols, or heraldry and markings on the guildhall may reflect that.

In Great Britain, guildhalls, instead of housing guilds, were sites of government (more akin to a town hall) and were used for the collection of taxes.

While important and influential guilds may have guildhalls located on a town or city square, fictional guilds that may wish to obscure their activities (assassins guilds, spy guilds, etc) may have their guildhalls located in secret places.
