Elevator Shafts

Elevator Shafts

ELEMENT

Elevator shafts are the housing for elevators. Fictional elevator shafts are often used for characters or creatures to move from one level of a structure to another without detection. Elevator shafts may connect to the rooftops, penthouses, sublevels, or the vents. They are home to spies, cat burglars, and people having a bad day.

Synonyms: elevator housing
Example Mythonyms: Shaft 2

Designing Fictional Elevator Shafts

Overview

Fictional elevator shafts, in addition to having a central vertical opening, often also include elements like ladders, access points to the vents, and for some reason, giant fans. They may also contain flickering lights.

Designers creating three-dimensional settings (especially for game worlds) should take care to organize the layout of any structure and where elevators are housed. Generating different levels of a building without respecting where the elevator shaft is located in levels above or below can quickly result in unintended impossible architecture.
