Coral Reefs

Coral Reefs

ELEMENT │ REGION & BIOME

Coral reefs are ecosystems characterized by reef-building colonies of coral. These corals build elaborate and colorful calcium carbonate architectures that in turn become homes to a wide range of aquatic life. Fictional coral reefs often contain shipwrecks, sunken ruins, sunken statues, or undersea habitation units. They may be home to underwater civilizations. They may be near kelp forests, underwater cave systems, or sudden oceanic drop-offs.

Synonyms: shoals
Example Mythonyms: the outer barrier reef, the Green Reef

Designing Fictional Coral Reefs

Overview

Coral reefs provide home to ~25% of all marine species and fictional coral reefs often reflect the color and life found in their real-world counterparts. They are often depicted as colorful, peaceful locations, bathed in sunlight and far separated from the deeper portions (and perhaps more dangerous) areas of a fictional ocean.
