The Problem with Utopias
The problem with utopias is that they are perfect. For worldbuilders looking for conflict for their stories, utopias can present an interesting challenge. Conflict can be hard to engineer in perfect places. Worldbuilders often solve this problem in several ways. Conflict, and the stories that stem from it, can occur not within the utopia, but between the utopia and some outside force. This outside force may be a competing faction such as an invading civilization. This outside force may be a force of nature, such as a dangerous new fictional disease running rampant or a blackhole drawing dangerous close to a paradise world. Worldbuilders often also change their utopias to be something less than perfect, and may instead have them be near utopias, flawed utopias, or false utopias.
