Shield Walls
Shield walls are fictional defensive perimeters created by high energy barriers. Fictional shield walls are common elements in science fiction worlds where they often act as fortified walls or great walls. They may have gatehouses that allow for passage through the barrier and they may be created by shield generators. Shield walls may protect against great storms, the vacuum of space, orbital bombardment, or giant monsters.

Designing Fictional Shield Walls
Typically, shield walls in fictional settings are created by a shield generator or other high energy power source. This creates narrative opportunities where the shield generator can be destroyed (covertly or by direct force) or the shields overloaded. If using a shield generator or other means to produce shields, consider the location of these elements as they may be high value targets during any attack.
Shield Appearance & Characteristics
Fictional shields take on a wide variety of colors, shapes, and other characteristics. Consider how a fictional shield appears if viewed (if it isn’t invisible) and what occurs when touched. Fictional shields may feel firm when contacted, may burn or electrocute, or may allow for the slow passage through them (perhaps only being impassible to lasers or fast moving projectiles).
