They are a frequent element of horror worlds and are often used by worldbuilders to heighten tension or unease. Often there is something lurking just beyond the reach of the light and in narrative worlds characters may need to brave the unknown and explore these spaces or traverse through them. They may contain flickering lights. Dark corridors are home to monsters, serial killers, and friends playing pranks.
