Elements

ESSENTIAL CONCEPT│TERMINOLOGY

Elements are the building blocks of fictional worlds. They are the environments, objects, narratives, and characters that define a setting. Biomes, factions, religions, places, histories, magic systems, technologies, and more are all elements used by worldbuilders to design fictional worlds. The choice of which elements to include in a world, the creation of novel elements, determining how elements interact and build from one another, and avoiding elements that are inconsistent with one another (or finding ways to make them consistent) are central to the design process. Elements contribute to a world’s overall tone, aesthetic, and genre. Some elements (core elements) are frequently used during the worldbuilding process.
