Alleyways

Alleyways

ELEMENT │ PLACE

Alleyways are narrow streets or roads between the buildings of a town or city, often only wide enough to be navigated on foot. Fictional alleyways are often a labyrinthian maze of interconnected passageways, paths, backdoors, and dead ends. They may lead to the sewers, to hideouts, to secret clubs, to hidden realms, to the slums, or to the rooftops. They are often a home to the criminal element, and may feature pickpockets, thieves, thugs, and more. They may be sites of abductions, murders, clues, daring chases, and ambushes.

Synonyms: back alleys, backstreets
Example Mythonyms: The Maze, Mugger’s Lane

Designing Fictional Alleyways

Overview

Fictional alleyways are often interwoven between the more central roads and streets of fictional towns and cities, creating a network of narrow corridors that connect distant locations. When designing alleyways, a sense of enclosure is important. This is often accomplished through the use of tall buildings, narrow streets, and overhanging awnings, bridges, and other structures. This lends itself to either a claustrophobic feel, or if the world is more optimistic, can be used to foster a sense of coziness. Fictional alleyways are also often arranged like a labyrinthian maze.
